There is an almost universal acceptance of same-sex relationships and marriage, a belief in the validity of transgenderism, and a rejection of cisgender norms. One of the hallmarks of progressive Christianity is the shift on issues of sexuality and gender. For example, in Matthew 15, Jesus tells the Syrophoenician woman, “It’s not good to take children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” This is viewed as Jesus’ having racial biases that were recognized and corrected during this exchange. However, Jesus’ humanity tends to be emphasized. You probably won’t find many progressive Christians who outright declare that Jesus was a sinner. This implies that God is somehow dependent upon creation, which casts serious aspersions on the nature of the Trinity. Others will affirm a slightly less radical view called panentheism, which is the belief that God and the world are inter-related. But some progressive Christians take it further and affirm the view of pantheism, which states that the universe is God. In the progressive church, the virgin birth and other miraculous events can be downplayed, ignored-or like the resurrection-viewed as less important than the life-lessons we can learn from these stories.Ī denial of the deity of Jesus would naturally be a denial of the Trinity. The concept of “Cosmic Christ” is sometimes presented as our ultimate goal…that Jesus is a model and exemplar of someone who was christened as both human and divine, and we can follow his example by finding the divine within ourselves.Īgain, not every progressive denies the physical resurrection, but the idea that Jesus was bodily raised back to life is often deemed less important or significant than the meaning we can draw from the idea of resurrection. In the progressive view, it’s often taught that we simply need to realize that we were never separated in the first place…that we are beloved and accepted by God just as we are.Ĭertainly not all progressive Christians will deny Jesus’ deity, but this doctrine tends to be downplayed. Instead, progressive Christians often teach that sin isn’t what separates us from God, but our own self-imposed shame. But they often deny the idea that we have some sort of a sin nature that was passed down to us from Adam and Eve. Progressive Christians don’t typically deny that sin exists or that it is a bad thing. The doctrine of Original Sin is roundly rejected in progressive Christianity, with the idea of Original Blessing put in its place. Scripture is also seen as contradictory, not internally coherent, and not authoritative for Christians. The Biblical writers are viewed as well-meaning ancient people who were doing their best to understand God in the times and places in which they lived, but they were not necessarily speaking for God. ![]() In the progressive church, the Bible is viewed more like an ancient spiritual travel journal than the inspired, inerrant, and authoritative Word of God. This is sometimes referred to as “Cosmic Child Abuse.” The idea that God the Father would require the blood sacrifice of his Son is perceived to be an indictment on God’s character, turning him into a divine abuser. Often, progressive Christians will refer to Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross as horrific or unnecessary. However, progressive Christians will typically deny one or more of the doctrines in the first list, and affirm one or more in the second. The following lists are not comprehensive, and they aren’t a catch-all for every progressive Christian. It’s not like progressive Christians typically introduce themselves like, “Hi! I am your friendly neighborhood progressive Christian, and I’m here to preach a different gospel!” The slow slide into progressive Christianity is so subtle it is almost imperceptible. While claiming the title “Christian,” and boasting a high view of the Bible, it is sweeping up many unsuspecting Christians into a false view of who God is and how he saves people.īut it can be very difficult to spot. This movement seeks to re-interpret the Bible, re-assess historic doctrines, and re-define core tenets of the faith. Some of the most high-profile Christian leaders are a part of it. Progressive Christianity is a movement that is infiltrating and influencing the Evangelical church.

In 1896, the City of Paris department store built a Beaux Arts building at Geary and Stockton.Three major structures helped shape Union Square as we know it today: ![]() The park was bustling, but little about it was grand or dashing. The Salvation Army Brass Band performs Christmas music in Union Square. ![]() Chronicle ads in the early 1870s are filled with notices of bands playing at the square, dignitaries meeting there and public feasts at low cost. In a short period from the early 1850s to 1870, Union Square transformed dramatically, from a scrubby patch of land to the premier meeting place for the working class. Several large churches emerged around the square, along with a few small mansions. Union Square was named in the 1860s, reportedly after supporters of the Civil War who met in the park for pro-Union rallies, although there’s no newspaper record of that. 21, 1928, Chronicle article, the term “sand lot baseball” came from those Union Square games.įitzhamon wrote: “One grand feature of that early Union Square baseball must have been that there were no windows to break and extremely few near-enough houses from which, with the score tied in the eighth, could issue the authoritative maternal clarion cry of ‘Jim-mee-ee! Come home - I need you!’” ![]() The land was designated as a park in 1855, and the sand hills were leveled off for a recreation field, where the city’s first class of hardscrabble baseball players learned the game. Later, some of the houses in the area had to be destroyed, because they were built in the middle of a street. Sand dunes caused natural detours in the street grids, and the few squatters who lived nearby paid no attention to the boundaries. But it began as a Mad Max-style wasteland, used as a dumping site. Union Square has a quarry-like feel now, surrounded on all sides by tall buildings that alternately project grand history or the sleek future. In a city where most public spaces have interesting past lives, Union Square’s story might be the best. But the past 100 years of change amount to small tweaks, after the biggest makeover in San Francisco history. Union Square is the Horatio Alger story of San Francisco neighborhoods, an undesirable scrub of land that through determination and marketing genius became a high-end retail center, tourism mecca and movie location favorite.Ĭhronicle readers may remember a rough patch for the square in the 1970s and 1980s some may even remember shopping in the less congested area before the 1940s parking garage was built. “On maps made in the early 1850s the vacant sand waste is merely marked ‘Public Square,’” The Chronicle reported years later. For years, no one bothered to give the space a name. There was almost no recreation, and just a few tents. John White Geary, later the first mayor of San Francisco, in 1849 donated 3 acres of windswept and flea-ridden sand dunes to the city. However, purchases of uniform elements including short sleeve shirts, polo shirts, T-shirts, and shorts remain low, even though offered by a number of companies as certified products. Those departments that specify flame-resistant work uniforms generally will buy garments that meet NFPA 1975 requirements. ![]() The higher category of station work uniform requirements included the flame-resistance test.ĭuring the past 20 years, certified work uniforms has remained a relatively low proportion of the overall fire service purchases. ![]() This resulted in a new thermal-stability test that provided a way of showing how material could melt and stick to itself. Yet other changes were needed because the heat resistance would not eliminate all nylon and polyester fabrics, as some fabric blends could hold up under the test conditions. One hundred percent cotton was considered the preferred uniform material because unlike polyester it doesn't melt and was comfortable. The base requirements included the same heat resistance test indicated above. In 1994, NFPA 1975 was overhauled to provide two classes of performance - baseline heat-resistant uniforms that could be either 100% cotton or wool and flame-resistant uniforms. Many flame-resistant materials are considered too "boardy" and lacked reasonable moisture absorption.įurther, some argued that turnout clothing or other emergency clothing was intended to provide protection based on its own properties without reliance on the work uniform. Moreover, there were a number of complaints about comfort. For organizations concerned about appearance, the uniforms did not have the crisp appearance typically associated with polyester and cotton blends, which tend to hold creases better. Many departments considered this type of clothing relatively expensive, partly due to the certification costs and the increased cost of material used. However, there was a clear division in the fire service about the acceptability these uniforms. The philosophy of having a standard that dictated use of flame- and heat-resistant work uniforms prevailed through 1994. This was handled by adding requirements to NFPA 1975 to demonstrate that the materials used in station work uniforms would remain flame resistant after at least 100 wash cycles. It was believed that retardants could eventually wash out. The practice fell out of use when it was argued that firefighters did not always wear the correct work trousers and that the insulation levels provided by turning out clothing were superior to that of any conventional pants.ĭuring this time, some fabrics relied on flame-retardant treatments in contrast to flame-resistant fabric such as those Aramids that retain the flame resistance properties over their entire service life. This preceded the use of modern turnout clothing when long coats and high boots were worn. In the early years after NFPA 1975 was adopted, some departments relied on the pants portion the uniform to provide a significant layer of insulation for the firefighter's lower torso. Materials such as polyester or nylon can be treated for flame resistance, but will generally melt and make burn injuries worse than those from natural fibers such as cotton, which when burned turn into ash instead of molten resin. The PPE can be used at any incident the London Fire Brigade attends and firefighters have been additionally issued with a pair of ‘Rescue Gloves’.The latter property was considered important because heat resistance provided a demonstration that the material would not melt under adverse conditions.Currently gloves are washed locally at the station, but they don’t come up as clean as the new ‘gold’ ones will. The gloves are made of a Nomex and Elk leather combination, which allows for them to be washed in a washing machine and all contamination removed. The Rosenbauer helmet is fitted with an integrated torch in the crest to light up the firefighters working area. The outer shell of the garments offer the maximum thermal protection available, whilst minimising the risk of heat stress. The ‘X-Flex’ range selected, is lighter than our previous PPE, has action pleats in the coat to allow more movement and the tough outer shell offers good air circulation enhanced breathability and comfort. This will allow firefighters to see any carbon contamination or general detritus at an earlier stage and send the items for cleaning. The light colour of the ‘Titan 1260 fabric with PBI fibres in the gold colour will show contamination easier than the previous dark blue PPE.The 'gold standard' of modernised personal protective equipment (PPE) reflects the changing role of the modern firefighter. ![]() Directly opposite the Tucson Convention Center, you're able to call in an order and pop over when it's ready.
